Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
