The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
